Giblet the chick
Re: Giblet the chickOh dear, this story is plucking at my heartstrings! I was so thrilled with the last entry where little Giblet seems to have worked out how to find her food, I do hope she continues to do well. She couldn't have a better mum.
Life's too short to quarrel
Re: Giblet the chickwhat a lovly story hope ur wee girl comes on sillkie are great wee birds i have 3 off them so nice and placid and very frendly giblet will enjoy the wee sillkies compenay hope they do well togeter anne
Re: Giblet the chickWell Gibby seems to be eating much better now & her head control has improved,
so I think it was probably something to do with the moulting. I've ordered the soluble vits anyway so she'll get those for a while to be sure, I think all my chooks will be getting some during moult time from now on. I will put some nice piccies of Gibblet on soon as I have time. "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."
--Immanuel Kant Re: Giblet the chickI forgot to put those photos on! But here is the latest on Giblet. Pebbles has gone
very broody in a nestbox in the main run, so Giblet was all on her own....Enter Ariadne (or Tiny as we usually call her) the Dorking hen who crows that I've rehomed for Skeksis. I tried her in with Giblet and they got on fine, she's 4 times the size of giblet but quite laid back. Its been a couple of weeks & they're still getting on well. We had some sunshine yesterday, Ariadne isn't ready to mix with the other chooks so I fenced off a little area in front of the run for her, this morning I left the run door open and it wasn't long before little Giblet ventured out - bit by bit - into her little "garden"! She's never dared go past the safety of the doorframe before and there she was strutting around her "garden" with Ariadne, and she found her way back to the run ok. Having Ariadne there must be giving her newfound confidence! I'm thinking about setting up something more permanent for them, perhaps a proper little picket fence? --Immanuel Kant Re: Giblet the chickThat is just so brilliant that Giblet is so happ with Ariadne. I do hope you keep them in together as they just look so happy. They have bonded and amazing that little Giblet is getting confidence from her giant friend :) x

Re: Giblet the chickI am proud to be a Gibletarian!
I've followed her story for ages, it's such an inspirational story and so lovely to hear she's found herself a big new friend and a bit of courage to venture out into her garden. Karen

Re: Giblet the chickwonderful progress - you must be such a proud mum!
Re: Giblet the chickThe next episode of Giblet's chickeny soap opera..........
I've been quite worried about Pebbles, Giblet's previous coop-mate, she finally came to terms with the fact that Eggbert was never going to hatch into a chick & abandoned her broody nest in the main run. But instead of enjoying finally being part of the main flock full-time, she's spent most of the last week hiding! She's terrified of my 2 exbatts, especially Hobnob who attacked her whenever food was around. Poor Pebbles wouldn't come out of the coop until the others had gone foraging & would spend ages hiding next to broody Beany. Pebbles has always been nervous of people & I couldn't pick her up, giving her treats just attracted the others, I just watched & worried & hoped life got better for her. It got worse as the week progressed & she was looking thin & tatty & I even wondered if I may have to rehome her.....This morning I saw her looking wistfully through the fence at Giblet's pen - her old home - so I gave it a try, I opened the fence & let her go in, then watched as Tiny approached her!!! Well what a result! They got on absolutely brilliantly, and all 3 of them are now a happy little flock!! Pebbles is positively glowing with relief, I swear she has a smile tucked under her beak. I've been singing "reunited" to them this morning! "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."

Re: Giblet the chickKitla, this is such a brilliant story, I love it! I'm so glad you have the 3 settled and happy, and so quickly. What a chilled out girl Tiny must be, and it's great that all 3 can make a happy little flock. I'm sure it will do Pebbles and Gibby the world of good having a bit more company.
Are you thinking of keeping the 3 of them together or will you want o integrate Tiny into the bigger flock at some stage? Karen

Re: Giblet the chicklovly wee girls hope they get on ok
Re: Giblet the chickTiny & Pebbles escaped their little garden today & ventured down the lawn with the
flock. Surprisingly they all seemed ok (fickle little things aren't they!) an hour later I noticed a few specks of blood on Tiny's comb, must've had a squabble I didn't see, so put her back in with Giblet (and blocked up the hole) Pebbles decided she wants to stay out with the flock for now, perhaps making friends with Tiny has given her confidence, but she has sanctuary when needs it. Tonight when I shut them up I heard scratchy sounds from Giblet's coop, I peeped inside & saw Giblet taking one of her night-time dustbaths, (something she often does in the hemp bedding in her coop). This was obviously a new experience for dear Tiny who was trying to settle down for the night, but was having Aubiose thrown all over her! KarenE Tiny seems to have integrated herself with the flock already, so I shall let her out for a range sometimes, but I'd like her to stay living with Giblet if possible. --Immanuel Kant Re: Giblet the chickHi Kitla
It all sounds so great I can't tell you how happy it makes me. I do hope you are getting fond of her already. It sounds like you are. I think it is great that she will keep living with little Giblet it will be perfect for her and I know she will love it with Gibs. She is such a sweet laid back girl. It is lovely that she made friends with Pebbles too and that she is so good with Giblet. Does Giblet sleep next to Ari/Tiny in the box or on the perch now? I wonder if Giblet is attached to her yet? Very lovely, do please keep us updated. xx
