SammySammyI have spent about 4 days going in his kennel and doing a little training with him. He watches and sits, down and stands. Didn't want to start walking until I was sure Tilly was going.
Anyway today Tilly was with her new Mummy and Valentina with the girl that bought her over. So I thought I would start with him. Did a little training and then, in my wisdom, thought I would take him for a walk. I attached the lead to the collar and out I went. Into the main part where all the dogs face. he went bloomin' mad God was he so strong. Didn't get far and wrestled him back to his kennel Did a bit more work and then walked the girls. I went into the feed prep room and said to the guys [the men] Good Heavens Sammy is so strong I don't think I can handle him. I put the lead on collar etc etc. They all had a good laugh......they all walk him on a dogmatic/halti and go round the back, not past the dogs. Because he is too strong for them. Obviously I am stronger than I think. I now have muscles like Claude Van Dam not good on a lady. The Manager has said please try again with a head collar on. To be continued............................ PS I think he is Rottie x Labrador http://www.busheyk9.co.uk

Re: SammyThe guys who usually walk him may have had a chuckle at your expense, but I'll be surprised if there isn't a good bit of respect to.
I am now a widow and live with my memories.
Re: SammyNo walk today. But I had time to spend 30 minutes in the kennel with him.
Boy is he kennel stressed. Not like Tilly, make enough noise and they will all keep away. Or Valentina, just pretend no one is there and turn off. But he is on an all time high, constantly busy. That must be hard going for him to hover 3 ft. from the floor all the time. His blood pressure must be through the roof. So I spent quiet time, just stroking him and telling him how handsome he is. There were quite a few times when he didn't have a frown and panting. A few times he ran to the front barking at a dog going by. But I said ah ah and called him to come and he did. So I may be able to do something, if I can hold onto to him. Tomorrow I will endeavour to take him out. But will have one of the men with me to see if I can handle all that strength http://www.busheyk9.co.uk

Re: SammyGosh Wendy he sounds a real little monkey, best of luck with him. They are so lucky to have you helping them
Re: SammyOoo it is so much easier with a head collar
I did ask one of the guys to walk with me past the kennelled dogs, just in case. But I managed and I stopped him having a go at them. Sammy went round that field 5 times today and eventually walked fairly well. I got him back to his kennel on my own. I have suggested he has Tilly's empty { } kennel as it is more out of the way. He is so stressed, he thinks he is the rescue's Policeman and is up watching everything that is going on. His kennel hand, says he never sees him laying down. That is not good for him. I hope they take notice. I am sure that will help calm him. I went into the staff room to pick up my bits and they said none of the women have walked him, as he is so strong. Is that a compliment to me or not http://www.busheyk9.co.uk

Re: SammyI think it certainly is a compliment - more about you and your ability than about your manly muscles! It looks like you are doing a fabulous job
No girls at the moment but look forward to getting more in the future. Proud mummy to Hector, a Bedlington Terrier x Jack Russell
Re: SammyWe walked some way today and I had him sitting watching me with dogs in the paddock, some distance away. Three steps forward I thought.
I had got him into the field, with a bit of huffing and puffing, but no rearing and being generally horrible. The more I can get him to not be aggressive the less likely he is to be tomorrow. Then it came time to take him back to his kennel, which is just at the side of all the dogs. I couldn't take him the way I took him out, so had to walk the gauntlet !!!. In the end Ricky had to take him from me, he just went bananas ! Oh well two steps back At least we did well, at a distance. I am desperately trying to get them to put him in Tilly's old kennel, as it is round the back and so he can relax a little. http://www.busheyk9.co.uk

Re: SammyLets hope that whoever has the last say backs you up and lets him relax in Tilly's kennel. It does make you wonder what has happened in Sammy's life to make him so stressed with other dogs. I hope the poor lad gets there in the end, even if it is going to be a long job. You do have a great understanding of dogs and the patience to go with it, so fingers crossed it will suddenly click in place with him that he is safe.
One good thing Wendy, he is keeping you fit. I am now a widow and live with my memories.
Re: SammyYes June he is keeping me fit, I have lost 4lb since starting there. My weight this year has been a roller coaster. Losing a stone in 2 weeks in February. I am at the stage where I need to hang onto it. I think they forget I am 70.
He hasn't been socialised I don't think. But I found out yesterday he was attacked by two Weimaraner dogs. So that hasn't helped at all. If he doesn't get moved I don't think I am going to get very far with that part. He is walking nicely now, when dogs are at a distance, so that is something. He has no self control, so teaching that will take time. If I am ever allowed to try to get it. http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning Re: SammyI walked him to the field and back without the guys today. No naughtiness with other dogs. A couple of times he thought about it. But I got him to pay attention to me and we got by. When I stopped and sat down, he lay down and actually turned over for tummy rubs. I think he is realising I am a constant for him. We had a really lovely stress free walk, which is good for him, let alone me !.
When I got back, Chris said do you want to put him in Tilly's old kennel............. Yes So he is now in a less stressful environment. Hopefully we can get moving forward. I feel it was a good day for him. Valentina is doing great. http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
