Food waste and how we can help...Food waste and how we can help...As an aside to the discussion about supermarkets and my thoughts about waste ...has anyone seen this app?
I've got it loaded on my phone. The idea is you can get in contact with others close by (including shops that are invovled) to give away waste produce so it doesn't end up as waste in our landfills). I'm trying to get it going in NZ....I think I'm the only one who has it in NZ on the South Island with one other on the North Island so it may take a while . I think it's a fabulous idea and it would well in the UK with such a large population with so much waste evident. It has been developed in Denmark and they reckon it has reduced waste by 25% over the past 5 years. This is the link which has information on what it is about and how to pop the app on your phone. https://olioex.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨)✰

Re: Food waste and how we can help...After a full Christmas dinner I took all the meat off the turkey to freeze for sandwiches then boiled up the carrcus added the left over veg and now have ten portions of turkey stew, packed in margarine tubs in the freezer. Waste not want not.
Re: Food waste and how we can help...I was looking on the www the other day and saw a piece of equipment that trns waste food into fertiliser - which in itself isn't amazing because you can do that in a compost heap - BUT this one took meat and dairy as well. No if that actually works then that would be truly amazing. If we could get people to create less waste but also be able to compost dairy and meat produce as well then it could reduce the amount going to landfill hugely. Then if we could go back to the older ideal of if it's not in the store you can't have it so think of something else for today .....ah well I can dream. ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨)✰

Re: Food waste and how we can help...
are you referring to Bokashi bins? They've been around for a while. Just before Christmas the UK announced that councils (if they don't already provide the service) must collect food waste separately from landfill waste to reduce methane emissions (greenhouse gases) - I've not heard anything from my local council but something about having a food caddy collection and in effect will also be reducing the number of black bin collections destined for landfill. I don't think it will affect me that much because I rarely have food waste - any fresh veg that doesn't get eaten which goes off (doesn't happen often, maybe the last of the celery or lettuce) + peelings will go into the compost bin, and I cook enough food for a meal or for 2 days (apart from chicken, I rarely eat much meat that contains bones) so there's no left overs that gets binned. Re: Food waste and how we can help...We have so very little food waste between the two of us. My left over from Christmas stuffing went to the birds, who greedily gobbled it all up. I think I was the only one on Christmas Day who ate it. I too cook meat for two days, and veggie peelings, sprout trimmings go into the compost bin.
To my horror I saw my daughter in law binning my home made bread sauce. Too late to save it! Re: Food waste and how we can help...
Christmas is the worst time for food waste. I rescued the goose and duck carcasses from my daughter's and picked off a large casserole of meat and made loads of stock. But not sure how long it will stay in the freezer - I usually just eat veg, only cook a joint or FR chicken if I'm cooking for the family. After 3 years of cooking just for me I find I'm not that fond of meat anymore (but it seems disrespectful to waste it) Dance caller. http://mo-dance-caller.blogspot.co.uk/p/what-i-do.html

They won't need to come to my house, there won't be anything in it, maybe a few peelings and I put them in my grey bin or give them to my friend for her guinea pigs. My box will come in handy for my sewing bits and bobs.
ilona Re: Food waste and how we can help...We already have them, a small one that is supposed to stand in the kitchen, then be emptied into a bigger one that is put out for collection. I use the bigger one in the garden for collecting weeds for the compost heap. I think the first time I ever put it out was with the bones from the Christmas carcasses.
